Industrial spaces aren’t known to be the most relaxing. Recognising that behind every industrial environment is a team who need space to step away, we designed a restorative breakout area in a warehouse. It’s a place shaped by nature-driven design to give operational and office teams somewhere to pause, connect and reset. A place where steel meets serenity.
The Brief
To support employee engagement, the team needed space away from their desks and screens – somewhere separate from the office and the warehouse floor. The aim was to create an environment for restorative breaks and natural interaction across different departments in the organisation.
Spaces like this matter because the moments between tasks often shape how teams collaborate. By creating a shared breakout zone, the design encourages cross-department connection, idea-sharing and helps shape company culture, while also giving people a place to reset and return to tasks with drive.
The Solution
Whether you’re stepping away from the hum of machines on the warehouse floor or taking a break from the desk, this is a space for wellbeing and connection. The NHS highlight that regular breaks are important to reduce fatigue, helping to reset focus and motivate during longer stretches of work so that people return with clearer thinking (keepingwellacademy.nhs). This space is designed to do that.
Nature in the Details
Nature-driven design sits at the heart of this breakout space, going far beyond planting. We considered how the environment is experienced; material, texture, sound and lighting working together to shift the feel of an industrial setting.
Alongside planting, timber slat walls with acoustic backing and integrated moss inserts soften acoustics and reduce the intensity from the surrounding warehouse. This contrast between environments helps define the space clearly, signalling it as somewhere to relax. Natural materials and an earthy colour palette introduce warmth and draw on our connection to nature to support a more restorative break experience.
Commercial Kitchen Design
A dedicated kitchen area is fully equipped to support the rhythm of the working day, with everything from microwaves to durable countertops that sit comfortably within the wider interior design in the warehouse. The layout keeps it simple and intuitive, removing friction so breaks feel easy. Materials are chosen with both practicality and experience in mind, including LVT flooring with a wood-effect finish. This brings in a subtle connection to nature while providing a hard-wearing, easy-to-clean surface suited to an environment where spills are common.
Space for Conversation
While primarily the space is designed for downtime, it also naturally supports more informal ways of working. In the floor plan, we dropped a collaborative table with surrounding benches that create an easy point for connection. The team can gather quickly and collaborate without the formality of a meeting room.
It’s intentionally flexible. A space that can shift between break and discussions. A space for conversations that don’t need to be scheduled or structured.
