Biophilic Design

Happy employees = happy business. That’s no secret. Yet many organisations fail to consider what their employees need from their workplace to feel fully supported. When it comes to positive work attitudes, biophilic design is a great place to start.

Biophilia describes the relationship between humans and nature. Biophilic design then works to enhance the connection to nature within our everyday environments. It can have a huge impact on your employees, helping to lower stress levels, as well as inspiring and engaging creativity.

It’s not always practical to fill your office with plants and greenery, but there are a few smaller changes that can be made and are fairly easy to add to your workplace.

Creating Your Office Oasis

Biophilia takes many forms and functions. We offer a variety of options with popular designs including:

Office Plants

Office Plants

Something as simple as introducing small desk plants can boost the morale of your workplace and have a positive impact on the work they produce. It can also remind staff to take a break during the day to nurture their plants, furthering their connection with nature.

Moss Wall Panels

Make a statement with moss wall panels. These can be full height (floor to ceiling) or, if you’re not quite ready to commit to a moss wall, we can provide smaller, moss wall panels. They’re easy to maintain as these systems use preserved moss. This material also doubles up as a great sound absorber to create a comfortable work environment.

Ceiling Canopies

Our designers can incorporate biophilia in many creative ways. In our own offices, we’ve combined preserved planting within a suspended ceiling canopy. This maintains its purpose (improving acoustics) but adds a pop of colour to the workplace.

Planters

Planters are a popular option for you to introduce plants into your office. We can install them as an attractive design feature, or even zone workspaces. We suggest keeping it simple and choosing plants that are easy to care for.

Bark Walls

A less common but equally unique option is walls made of bark. This unique texture complements many interior designs, including Scandi and Eco interiors. This is another one we love so much that we HAD to have it in our own office.

The Power of Nature

Adding elements of nature to your workplace can have many benefits:

  • Productivity – Using biophilic design in your workplace can make a huge difference in staff motivation and productivity. As a great source of clean oxygen, this can increase levels in the office to stimulate your employee’s minds. In fact, UK based study, ‘The Relative Benefits of Green versus Lean Office Space’, found that those who worked in offices with natural greenery saw a 15% rise in productivity over a three month period.
  • Creativity – Having a unique workplace with engaging plants can help to inspire staff and stimulate their creative thinking. When they return to their desks, this can be applied to their work.
  • Wellbeing – According to the UK mental health charity, Mind, being in green spaces or bringing elements of nature into our everyday life can help to reduce feelings of anxiety, stress or anger. When you incorporate biophilia into your office design, this can make your team feel calmer.
  • Aesthetics – Plants, moss wall panels and other foliage around the office have become increasingly popular. This is because of its ‘green’ and ‘eco’ design that most sustainability businesses are looking to achieve.
