The Brief
With a rapidly expanding team, our client wanted to create a breakout space that supported the needs of their people throughout the working day. And, as a company that places huge value on its people, they understood that the right environment could unlock real value by improving productivity, uplifting employee satisfaction and helping to retain top talent. For them, it was clear that a thoughtfully designed breakout area could also influence employee engagement in subtle but measurable ways, creating a sense of belonging and pride in the workplace.
This wasn’t about a coffee corner or plonking down a few chairs (though yes, great coffee was a non-negotiable!). We approached the project by understanding how the team worked, where natural pinch points occurred in their day and which areas could be transformed to add the most value without unnecessary expense. In this case, there was a lack of communal spaces, which had a direct impact on team morale and company culture – two very important values for the business. On top of this, employees wasted time waiting around to make a coffee, meaning productivity levels were not at their optimal.
Considered within the brief were, of course, the practical amenities needed for such commercial spaces to support everyday office life.
Working with the team, we delivered a quick, targeted solution that maximised a smaller footprint – proving that even small fit outs can make a significant impact.
The Solution
To make this breakout area more than just a pit stop, we focused on creating a space that actively shaped the team’s day, energising them and giving them a place to reset before returning to their desks with renewed focus and productivity.
Biophilia at Work
Natural elements were the cornerstone of this breakout room design. Research consistently shows that spaces connected with nature improve focus and reduce stress – something we wanted the team to feel the impact of from the moment they stepped in. Rather than simply adding a few plants, we integrated biophilic features into the fabric of the space. This experience with nature produces many cognitive benefits for employees when they return to their desks, including improved performance on tasks that rely on memory and attention (sciencedirect.com).
Beyond traditional elements, we introduced a floor-to-ceiling bark wall with a texture that adds calm and depth to the room. Bifold doors and large windows flood the space with natural light, creating an uplifting environment that helps maintain energy levels throughout the day.
Of course, you’ll notice a few plants plotted around – they’re not just decorative; they support wellbeing, improve air quality and signal a thoughtful, people-first approach.
Modern Commercial Design
The visual language of the breakout space was as important as its functionality. We embraced a modern design, pairing black ceiling tiles and industrial-style furniture with the natural biophilic elements. This approach gives the space a contemporary, professional feel while remaining warm and approachable, perfect for energising the team without feeling sterile.
Importantly, this breakout area isn’t just for internal use; clients often pass through or linger here. A thoughtful, modern design for client-facing areas helps maintain a strong impression, demonstrating that the business values both its people and its brand experience.
The Basics
In this breakout space, we also installed a fully equipped kitchen office. To be thoughtfully designed, we provided everything the team needs to keep downtime to a minimum and productivity levels high – no more waiting around to use the microwave or make a cup of coffee! Of course, functionality didn’t mean compromising on style. The worktop surfaces, cabinetry and flooring were selected to complement the wider aesthetic, creating a visually cohesive environment that flows naturally from kitchen to breakout.
Beyond a lunchroom, this multifunctional space supports spontaneous catch-ups, informal meetings and moments to recharge. It acts as a cultural hub, encouraging interaction across departments and strengthening the sense of community within the office. The investment may be focused on a single area, but its impact ripples across the workplace.
